ESAC II is supported by The Belgian Federal Science Policy Office, previously known as the 'Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs' (OSTC), under the theme 'Global Change, Ecosystems and Biodiversity'of the Second Multiannual Scientific Support Plan for a Sustainable Development Policy (SPSDII).

The project has a duration of 4 years (starting in 2001) and is a continuation of the existing Belgian contribution to the long-term surveillance of the Earth’s atmosphere.
